James Seddon was an American lawyer, politician, and Confederate States Army officer. He was born on July 13, 1815, in Falmouth, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1836. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1845 to 1855 and was a member of the Virginia Secession Convention in 1861. Seddon was appointed Secretary of War for the Confederacy in November 1862 and served in that position until the end of the Civil War. After the war, he returned to Virginia and resumed his law practice until his death on August 19, 1880.
